Intriguing Tree Barks

Posted on April 15, 2013 by SDG

Trees aren’t just ornamental because of their flowers and foliage! There are many trees with fascinating barks which provide interest all year long, especially in the winter!

Stewartia-pseudocamella

Japanese Stewartia (Stewartia pseudocamella)

This “camo” bark is very interesting to look at; it peels in sections revealing new colors.

Cornus-sericea1

Red Twigged Dogwood (Cornus sericea)

In the winter months the Red Twigged Dogwood contrasts vibrantly with the white snow.

American Beech (Fagus grandifolia)

American Beech (Fagus Americana)

An old American Beech’s bark looks digitized with cracks and dots.

Pinus-sylvestris

Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris)

The orange in the Scotch Pine is brilliant.  Its layers, deep grooves, and sap create an array of textures.

Acer-griseum

Paperbark Maple (Acer griseum)

The Paperbark Maple has glossy, exfoliating bark

Acer-pseudoplatanus2

Sycamore Maple (Acer pesudoplatanus)

The bark looks like a woodworker tooled swirled designs into it.

AppleMark

Carpinus betulus (European Hornbeam)

This steel gray bark feels smooth and like a muscle.
